Happy Holidays from our team at Big Rocks Organizing! For many of us, the holiday season is a time for gift giving with our loved ones. As a result, we welcome new items into our homes that can pile up and be a drag on holiday cheer. Instead, we invite you to give back while cleaning out.

During this season of generosity, donating to wonderful local charities is a great way to give back to our community while also making space for new items you love! In addition, your donations are tax deductible.

Here are some of our favorite local organizations and charities to donate to:

  • CHAP- Children’s Healing Art Project is an innovative and inclusive healing arts program. Services are free of charge to children, teens and families affected by pediatric illness, disability or special needs. Presently, they seek donations of model magic clay, sketchbooks, and colored pencils. Please ensure that your donations are in new condition and in the original packaging. In addition, see their Amazon wishlist for more donation ideas.
  • Schoolhouse Supplies accepts donations of new or reusable school supplies, office supplies, art supplies, and other learning materials for classrooms. Then, they distribute these items to eligible schools, which helps them fulfill their mission of providing free school supplies to low-income students. If you’d like to make a donation, please review the list of items they are accepting, then book a donation appointment.
  • Donate to the Epilepsy Foundation through their partnership with Savers thrift stores. Support the Foundation, as well as partnering local organizations, by donating gently used clothing and household items you no longer need. The Epilepsy Foundation receives payment as a result of your generous donations. Find a location near you.
  • Help divert resources from the landfill. Donate textiles to Portland nonprofit Sudan Nation. As a result, these donated textiles go back into the community and help benefit refugees and those experiencing homelessness. This organization is mainly volunteer-run and would love your textile donations!
  • Do you have soft textiles that are ripped, stained, or tattered? Find an Eco World drop-off box near you. Similarly, Just Porch It! offers convenient pick-up services. These can be great alternatives to Goodwill, which is often more strict on acceptable materials.
  • Sam’s Attic is a non-profit thrift store in Beaverton. Proceeds directly support children in Good Samaritan International schools and orphanages in Uganda. They seek donations of the following items: vintage pieces, home decor, lighting, kitchenware, small appliances, framed art, linens, seasonal items, clothing, jewelry, toys, games, books, CDs, DVDs, and furniture.
  • Holy Trinity Church in Beaverton accepts donations of canned food, new toiletries, and cleaning products for their Food Closet Ministry. They work to provide free nutritious food and services to those in need.
  • Bra It Forward is a program accepting donations of new or gently used bras. Find any Soma store location, such as Washington Square or Clackamas Town Center, then drop off your donation.
  • ReBuilding Center is a climate justice nonprofit organization. They reuse and repair materials, strive to be affordable for all, reduce waste and wasteful consumption, and make the best use of our planet’s limited material resources. To this end, you can drop off lumber, trim, doors, windows, glass, fixtures, tile, and more at their Portland storefront. For a complete list and frequently asked questions, check out their website.
  • Guild of Oregon Woodworkers accepts donations of quality wood. They serve the community by building items for the public good and charitable organizations. In addition, they also offer estate sale services for woodworkers and their families.
  • Piano. Push. Play is a fun and immersive art experience around the Portland area. This project paints pianos, then displays them in public areas for anyone to play during the summertime. They are accepting piano donations for next year. Pianos must be in good condition, in tune, and have all working keys.
